Prepare for your plumbing call

Gather details without taking risky technical steps.

Take useful photos

An overview helps locate the equipment; a close-up can show the mark or connection observed. Take photos from a safe place, without moving heavy equipment or opening electrical equipment.

Also describe what the photo does not show: when it appeared, sounds, smells and changes over time. Note whether the situation affects one room or several.

Make a short description

Start with the symptom, then the room and duration. Add recent changes: a replaced fixture, water interruption or nearby work, without assuming they explain the cause.

Keep your address and access details handy for the conversation. Report active damage or any risk to people immediately.

Prepare your next questions

Ask what information will be needed and how the next step will be arranged. Before any work, clarify the scope, charges and terms proposed for your situation.

Keep equipment references and documents received. They will help with follow-up or future maintenance.

Note what happens without concluding the cause

A useful worksheet separates observations from assumptions. “Water appears under the cabinet after draining the sink” is more precise than “the trap is broken”. State the frequency, approximate amount and fixtures used at the same time. You can note recent changes without presenting them as a diagnosis.

If several people use the dwelling, bring their observations into one timeline. Keep the original photos and date new observations. You do not need to dismantle a part or reproduce a leak to provide information.

Compare two proposals on the same basis

Compare the written scope rather than just the total. One proposal may include replacing an entire assembly; another may cover only one part. Distinguish visit charges, planned work, materials and items still to be confirmed.

Before accepting, ask how an unexpected discovery will be explained, priced and authorized. Keep the proposal and any written changes. Dates, availability and any warranties are confirmed directly with the contractor you hire; preparing a description on this site does not book any work.
